If you haven’t been to Disney World lately, get ready to face a HUGE number of changes.
Many character meet-and-greets have reopened, character dining is back to “normal” in many places, buffets are coming back to some spots, and there are lots of construction changes being made daily. Today we noticed another change made to a meet-and-greet area in Fantasyland.
As we were walking through Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom, we noticed that Peter Pan was back at his more traditional meet-and-greet spot near Peter Pan’s Flight.
Previously, we had seen Peter running around Fantasyland, meeting sometimes near the castle, and meeting other times near Adventureland.
While it was a bit complicated to see Peter before, Cast Members indicated that Peter has essentially returned to his regular Fantasyland spot, so you’ll want to check for him there during your next trip. Just remember that things are always subject to change.
But, this meet-and-greet change isn’t the only new thing we noticed about the Peter Pan area today. If you look behind Peter Pan in this meet-and-greet spot in Fantasyland, you’ll see a map of Never Land. On the map, there are a variety of spots identified, such as Pirate’s Cove. But the name of one of the spots has changed.
On the left-hand side of the map (when you’re facing it directly), there is a depiction of the Never Land Tribe area. That area was previously identified on the map as “Indian Camp.” That has since been changed and now this spot is identified as “Never Land Tribe.”
It appears this change is likely one example of the Walt Disney Company’s dedication to its newest key — the key of inclusion. Disney added this key to their principles back in 2020. At that time, they explained that the Key of Inclusion represents Disney’s commitment to “cultural transformation.” Disney also noted that the key would not just stand on its own but would be encouraged throughout all keys.
This also seems to align with some of the warnings and changes Disney has made to certain films on Disney+. Disney has placed disclaimers on certain movies on the streaming service, indicating that they have negative depictions and/or the mistreatment of people or cultures.
Disney also removed certain titles containing these “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures” from children’s accounts on Disney+. Back in 2021 when this took place, one of the movies removed was Peter Pan. This is one of the films that also has a warning regarding negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures when viewed on an adult account.
Other changes centered on inclusivity are on their way to Disney World, including the retheme of Splash Mountain. Disney has indicated that the new concept — which is a ride themed to The Princess and the Frog — is “inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”
We’ve also seen little details incorporated into the parks to showcase inclusivity, like the addition of a cochlear implant on a mannequin in EPCOT, or a mannequin sitting in a wheelchair.
