Disney layoffs officially continue as several hundred employees have just been cut. If you’ve been following Disney news for the past several months, you know that layoffs and cost-saving measures have been a very hot topic for Disney Executives.
And it looks like that pattern is continuing as hundreds more employees lose their jobs. Let’s dive into everything we know about this newest round of layoffs.
Deadline has reported that a new wave of layoffs hits hundreds of Disney employees mainly working in tech and HR. These layoffs come as another step in Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro’s efforts to save money and cut costs across the company. This is the third, and smallest, wave of layoffs to hit the company in the past year.
These layoffs do not come as a large shock after the message from Disney’s Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer Horacio Gutierrez that hinted at layoffs coming in the future. While his message did not directly mention layoffs or any specific plans, the tone made it fairly clear that a restructuring and wave of layoffs were likely, as they were working to make his division “a much smaller organization.”
He also alluded to AI and the desire to create a more automated work environment, which is also unsurprising after Disney recently appointed Karandeep Anand as the company’s very first Chief Technology Officer.
In addition to layoffs and the increased use of AI, Josh D’Amaro also recently implemented an early retirement program, which gave select executives the chance to retire early with certain benefits and incentives. All of these efforts seem to be only the start of Disney’s plans to save money and restructure across the company.

Sadly Disney is now like every corporation. Executives and stockholders scream they’re not getting richer, AI is now taking over all aspects of life and so humans are being fired just before the holidays (especially bad when it’s a beloved company who now pivots on everything that made people fall in love with them…and it’s not just Disney) but most grating is Disney says it wants to save money though it certainly doesn’t care if its visitors do! In fact, they have the unmitigated gall to not only keep prices high while guests miss out on much of the parks and put up with resort and road construction but now Disney is raising prices while still taking away, not giving! Why is anybody supporting and enabling this??? Josh, we had high hopes for you but you and your new executive cohorts are ripping the heart out of Disney and Wdw! We are soooooo disappointed….It’s time for people to speak with their wallets and stay home SMH
True, but this does happen to most if not all large companies. After several generations of new leadership and administration, the original vision and brand begins to fade in the name of “New Direction” or progress. The new direction always is toward cost cutting and profit margin. In a lot of cases, it is the only way to attempt to save a company, sadly, it almost always ends in the demise of the organization. Think of all the large store chains, merchandise brands or even resorts that you enjoyed years ago that no longer exist. So is progress and it’s often unseen result. The real problem here is in the near future, due to the loss of the original visionaries and also the younger board of directors and their chosen leaders….the day will come when no one will really know who Walt Disney was. This is the reality that saddens most of us.
