They immediately reminded us of the cars used on Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. But there’s a catch. The more we look at what Disney has shown us, the less convinced we are that this is simply another Disney trackless ride. In fact, Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto may be using some very different technology underneath all that magical furniture.

First, LOOK at These Ride Vehicles

Disney has explained that when guests enter Casita, the house itself will assemble pieces of furniture into vehicles to transport us through its rooms. Disney also says the vehicles will feel “lively and dynamic,” reacting to what’s happening around them almost like characters themselves. The models Disney displayed at D23 show vehicles made from mismatched household furnishings, including pieces resembling dressers, pianos, couches, and chairs. Each vehicle appears to have two rows with four seats in each row, giving us a likely capacity of eight guests per vehicle.

And that’s where our Disney ride nerd alarms started ringing. Because Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway ALSO uses individual ride cars with two rows accommodating four guests each. Visually, the similarities are pretty striking, too.

Both have that wide, compact dark-ride vehicle shape. Both use bench-style seating. Both disguise a fairly substantial ride chassis beneath a colorful themed shell. And in both attractions, the vehicle isn’t merely transportation. It’s supposed to have personality.

Runaway Railway’s train cars separate from Goofy’s locomotive and become characters in the chaos around them. Disney has already told us that the Encanto vehicles will similarly react to scenes throughout Casita. So…trackless ride confirmed? Not so fast.

These Might NOT Be Trackless

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is trackless. Tiny markers embedded in the ride floor help tell its vehicles where to move, essentially working as a navigation system. That freedom allows the cars to separate, turn, regroup, dance, and move differently depending on the scene. At first glance, Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto seems practically MADE for that technology. Casita moves its floors, doors, tiles, drawers, and furniture throughout the movie. Giving a bunch of trackless vehicles the freedom to scoot around rooms independently would seem like the obvious choice.

Although Disney has NOT officially confirmed the ride system, it is possible that Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto will use an advanced track-based ride system with a greater-than-normal range of motion, rather than a traditional Disney trackless system. That would explain a few things. And one piece of concept art suddenly becomes VERY important.

That Staircase Isn’t Just for Show

Disney’s newest concept art shows the ride vehicles traveling through Casita while seemingly climbing a huge staircase. Which sounds simple until you remember that moving an entire eight-passenger ride vehicle up an actual flight of stairs would be a spectacularly complicated way to get people to Antonio’s room. Disney could build a lift system.

Or…

It could make you THINK you’re climbing.

Just days before D23, we dug into a new Disney patent describing a theme park illusion that could make riders feel like their vehicle is moving uphill or downhill even while the actual ride path remains relatively flat. The system uses angled walls, painted surfaces, tilted scenic pieces, projection, and potentially moving show elements to convince your brain that the vehicle is changing elevation. Then Disney released concept art of the Encanto vehicles apparently climbing a staircase.

The patent drawing and the Casita concept are close enough that we have become the human version of the red-string conspiracy board. Disney has not said that this patent is being used for Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto, so that’s still our speculation. But if it IS, Casita is an almost ridiculously perfect place to use it. This is a magical house where architecture doesn’t obey architecture. If a hallway tilts, a floor shifts, or a staircase seems to stretch underneath you, nobody needs an engineering explanation. It’s Casita. Casita does what Casita wants.

The Vehicle Itself Could Help Sell the Trick

Imagine the vehicle remaining on a fairly level track while the seat platform pitches backward slightly. The walls shift around you. Stair rails angle downward. Projection effects move. Casita’s tiles ripple alongside the vehicle. Your eyes say you’re climbing. Your inner ear gets just enough movement from the vehicle to agree. Suddenly, you’re going upstairs without the actual ride system needing to haul an eight-person couch up a staircase.

That’s also why we don’t think the similarity to Runaway Railway necessarily tells us exactly how this ride will operate. The Encanto vehicles may LOOK like those trackless train cars because that shape works incredibly well for a family dark ride. Eight people fit inside, sightlines are decent, and there’s plenty of space underneath and around the seats to hide machinery. What matters is what Disney puts beneath that couch.

This Could Be Disney’s Answer to Mystic Manor

There’s another attraction that keeps coming up whenever theme park fans talk about this project: Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland. There is definitely some potential for an experience of Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto to be an Encanto version of Mystic Manor.

Mystic Manor is built around a magical house where ordinary objects come alive and the rooms themselves become part of the adventure. Sound familiar? Encanto hands Imagineers basically the same toy box, only this time the HOUSE is explicitly alive.

The difference could be the ride system. Mystic Manor uses trackless vehicles. If the reports about Encanto are correct, Disney may be chasing the same kind of unpredictable magical-house experience while using a track-based vehicle capable of much more physical movement. Trackless technology gives Imagineers incredible freedom in where a vehicle travels. A more dynamic track-based vehicle could give them something different: the ability to make the VEHICLE itself feel more alive.

We Already Know Where We’re Going

Disney has also given us a better idea of what those vehicles will encounter. Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto takes place on Antonio’s gift day, and riders are invited into Casita as part of the celebration. Imagineers are creating rooms for the attraction that weren’t seen in the movie, and the ride will eventually take guests upstairs into Antonio’s rainforest room. Disney says more than 50 animals will appear throughout the attraction, with its Animals, Science and Environment team helping ensure the animals are appropriate to Colombia. We’ve already seen glimpses of a capybara, toucan, donkey, pig, and other critters.

We also spotted butterflies and flowers filling the staircase concept art, which could suggest Isabela’s powers are getting involved. And there’s a suspicious shadowy figure lurking in one corner that has us wondering whether a certain Madrigal family member might be hiding inside the walls. We don’t talk about him. Obviously.

So, Here’s How We Think Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto Will Work

Put all the pieces together and our current theory looks something like this:

• You’ll board an eight-passenger vehicle themed as furniture magically assembled by Casita. It will travel along a physical guided route rather than roaming completely freely like Runaway Railway.
• But that doesn’t mean it’ll feel like your average slow-moving dark ride.
• We think the vehicle may be able to pitch, turn, or otherwise react dramatically to scenes while practical sets and projection effects manipulate your sense of direction and elevation.
• That could make doors move around you, floors seem to shift, furniture “dance,” and staircases apparently carry you upward without requiring the entire attraction to constantly change elevation.
• Then everything gets progressively wilder as you travel deeper into Casita before reaching the massive rainforest inside Antonio’s room.

Basically, Disney could be combining the character-like ride vehicles of Runaway Railway, the magical-house chaos of Mystic Manor, and some brand-new Imagineering illusion work into one attraction. That’s a pretty ambitious recipe. And we haven’t even met all 50 animals yet.

Disney hasn’t confirmed the exact ride system or how that staircase effect will work, so there are still plenty of secrets hiding inside Casita. But between the vehicle models, concept art, outside reporting, and that VERY conveniently timed patent, we’re starting to get a much clearer picture. And if our theory is even close? That innocent-looking couch may have some serious tricks underneath the cushions.
