Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are talks about a live-action Princess and the Frog, and if this is true, we’re going to be singing “Dig a Little Deeper” all day long.
Colman Domingo said he is in talks to co-write an original live-action film featuring Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog. Eek! Domingo will co-write alongside Tony-nominated director Robert O’Hara. While deals have not been closed yet, it is not being described as a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog but more as an original story inspired by the cartoon.

The original movie came out in 2009, so this news is coming about 17 years later. Disney has been very into live-action movie remakes lately, and while some have been total hits, others have been misses. Lilo & Stitch earned a record-breaking $183 million four-day opening weekend domestically but…

…Snow White, which was released the same year, only had a $42.2 million opening. Lilo & Stitch is already working on a sequel as well, while others did not feel as strongly about Snow White.

Moana just hit the theaters recently as well, with mixed reviews. Some are happy to see their favorite princess on the big screen, while others criticize the acting and details.

Domingo has worked on some incredible projects, including Michael, Disclosure Day, The Four Seasons, and Euphoria. When discussing his acting career with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “Maybe it’s because I’m sort of leaning into the third act of my career. For a long time, as artists, we’re in the ‘planting seeds’ phase. I feel like I’m in an incredible harvest period.”

There was supposed to be a cartoon based on Princess Tiana, called Tiana, that was announced in 2020 as a “long-form musical comedy” and featured Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as Tiana as she “sets off for a grand adventure as the newly crowned Princess of Maldonia, but a calling to her New Orleans past isn’t far behind.” The Hollywood Reporter announced that the show has been officially canceled on Disney+ because the company wants to focus more on theatrical movie releases.

It’s surprising that Disney doesn’t pick-up on the idea that the public isn’t that interested in these live action remakes. I’d think after the financial loss that Moana will end up being that they would steer hard in the other direction and get away from these. Lilo & Stitch was great, but that’s the outlier.
I agree with Todd that Disney doesn’t seem to act with brains or heart anymore and they don’t care what moviegoers want. The magic of Disney movies is long gone. Cinderella and Mulan live were both great movies, and the only good live ones, (perhaps Pinocchio was with the great Tom Hanks but it was never released to theaters. Ditto Hocus Pocus 2!) but NOT a retelling of the animated classics. The last great movie – live or animated – from Disney was Jungle Cruise and how long will we have to wait for a second one? But it has to have the four main characters and Proxima (Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall and Veronica Falcon)!! Mary Poppins returns was a winner but not based on a classic cartoon. I sure hope they don’t desecrate Up!!! The live movies have really been duds so Disney should not go down this rabbit hole again!!! I definitely won’t entertain seeing Tiana live action!!
